Blood donation has a long history, with the first transfusions being conducted leveraging poorly understood science and early research. However, it wasn’t until Richard Lower explored the science of animal blood donation. He was able to adequately transfuse blood between two dogs without causing any substantial damage. From there, the research around the particular topic of blood gradually evolved, eliminating superstitions and shifting far from animal experiments. Blood transfusions gradually became a standard in health topics and the medical sector, thanks to improvements in transfusion technology and Karl Landsteiner’s discovery of the ABO human blood type system to accurately identify donors. Due to the success of World Health Day in 2000, which focused on blood donation and transfusion safety, ministers of health from all over the world overwhelmingly declared World Blood Donor Day is an annual event held on June 14 yearly, preferring Landsteiner’s birthday to honour it in May 2005, during the 58th World Health Assembly.
