What is Transcendental Meditation?
Transcendental Meditation (TM) is a practice for clearing the mind of distracting ideas and fostering a calm sense of awareness. It is a silent kind of meditation that should be practised twice a day for a total of 15-20 minutes (or more) in a gloomy, quiet room with no distractions or music. The TM method was developed in 1958 by meditation instructor Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. How to Do Transcendental Meditation
Transcendental Meditation can be practised at any time and in any place. First and foremost, you must choose a mantra. There are two principal requirements for choosing a mantra.
Firstly, there has to be an utterly pointless sound. Do not concentrate on this mantra throughout your meditation session. Rather, employ the mantra to assist you to focus on something that doesn’t foster cognitive thought. Your mind will gradually drop into fewer conscious levels of thought until it reaches inner quietness.
Secondly, there must be a resonance to the vibration. Consider the obvious “Om,” which has been employed by yogis for ages. This is meant to correspond to your mind’s inherent vibrational frequency. As a result of its attraction to your selected mantra, it will be soothed and remained silent.
Once you’ve decided on your mantra, you may proceed by following the steps below.
- You can, however, sit cross-legged on the floor, on a chair, or on the couch, depending on your level of comfort.
- After that, pick a good comfortable position and close your eyes. Take a few deep breaths to center yourself and relax your mind.
- Then, after you’ve done that, you should do a mindful body scan. A body scan is nothing more than a mental note of how your body is feeling. Therefore, scanning from head – to – toe to detect whether there are any pains or aches, and whether any emotions or feelings are occurring.
- Open your eyes for a split second before shutting them again. You’ll have to close your eyes for twenty minutes during the practice.
- Following this, it is indeed time to implement the mantra into the practice. Repeat the mantra quietly and gently in your minds.
- Immediately reconnect to the mantra whenever you sense your mind wandering.
- Return to the present after 20 minutes by gradually moving your toes and fingers.
- Gradually open up your eyes and take some time to rest and relax until you’re prepared to start your day’s activities.
