Since February up to recently, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) Ogun II Office in Ota shut down the facilities of 39 illegally packaged water producers in the state.
The Ogun II State Coordinator for NAFDAC, Mawo Benu, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Ota, Ogun State.
Mr Benu stated that 43 packaged water facilities were investigated over the period.
He pointed out that 39 of them were found to be unacceptably high due to an array of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) violations.
He stated that the cited facilities were eventually sanctioned.
Mr Benu said that NAFDAC’s enforcement operations from February to date have disclosed that there is no escape route for producers of unhealthy and unregistered regulated products.
He stated that NAFDAC has pledged to take action against illegal producers and non-compliant facilities within its authority.
“The Agency earnestly seeks the collaboration of the public and all concerned stakeholders in our relentless pursuit to rid the nation of unregistered and unsafe products,” added Mr Benu.
“In addition, members of the public are encouraged to report any illegal production sites or suspicious activities to the nearest NAFDAC office to help safeguard public health.”
Mr Benu went on to say that, despite being registered, certain facilities were found to have slipped below acceptable hygiene standards during routine inspections.

He stated that the facilities were no longer meeting the minimum requirements under which they were initially registered.
He outlined the violations that he discovered, which included operating with expired licenses, producing unauthorised pack sizes, transferring facilities to unapproved manufacturing sites, and making use of fake NAFDAC registration numbers for unregistered products.
